Have you ever heard of King Ludwig II?
Well King Ludwig was crazy (so people tell the story.) He would build elaborate castles. He built a hill so that he could put a cave underneath. He would add many secret passageways throughout the castles.

This is King Ludwig. He was the king of Bavaria from 1864- 1886. The writing beneath him says "Of Bavaria and his castles" in German. |
He would make decisions without consulting with his subjects even if the decisions were bad for the kingdom. Also, he would take his subjects money and use it on his projects.
In 1866 Prussia and Austria went to war. King Ludwig sided with Austria. The Prussians won. Austria and Germany were conquered by Prussia. Then Prussia and France went to war. Bavaria, under King Ludwig II's direction, sided with France. After the Prussians won the war, Prussia led The New German Empire.
In 1885 Bavaria was having financial troubles and King Ludwig's advisors declared him insane because when the bank was threatening to take King Ludwig's property he did not handle the situation the way that his advisors would have liked. This led him to be pronounced insane. King Ludwig was imprisoned in Berg Palace. The next day he and his doctor drowned in Starnberg Lake. This was a surprise because he was a very good swimmer and the only person that could declare him sane died with him. The rumor is his guards took him to Lake Starnberg and drowned him.
This is the cross that shows where King Ludwig was found dead.
